Arlington is the northeast corner of Cranston, the streets along Cranston Street and Dyer Avenue between the Providence line and the old Cranston Print Works. The Print Works ran on the Pocasset River from 1807 until it closed in 2009, and the neighborhood was built for its workers: 1880s mill cottages near the river, 1900s through 1920s two- and three-families on the streets climbing toward Park Avenue, on stone and block foundations with cellars.
The Pocasset is the flood risk. On March 30 and 31, 2010, it went over its banks at the Print Works dam and flooded the low streets on both the Cranston and Providence sides. The rest of the year the problems are groundwater through stone cellar walls, combined sewers that back up through floor drains in a heavy rain, and a century-old plumbing stack that sends a third-floor leak through two ceilings.
